Two Great Places Online To Take Your Daughter (and Son) This International Day of the Girl

Happy International Day of the Girl!  Founded by the UN in 2012, this day aims to 'highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights'.

There are so many ways to celebrate the girls of the world, and one way is to help them realise they are powerful, strong and awesome in every diverse way.  To help them see that history is full of incredible women, politics are changing and they can be involved, that what they do can not only impact the world but can lead it in great directions.

The two online resources below - A Mighty Girl and Amy Poehler's Smart Girls - are well worth a look.  For you, for your daughter or niece, or for any of the girls in your life.  Or boys.  Because boys need to know about the great women who have shaped their world also.

A Mighty Girl is the world’s largest collection of books, movies, and music for parents, teachers, and others dedicated to raising smart, confident, and courageous girls.

After years of seeking out empowering and inspirational books for our four young nieces, we decided to create A Mighty Girl as a resource site to help others equally interested in supporting and celebrating girls. The site was founded on the belief that all children should have the opportunity to read books and watch movies that offer positive messages about girls and honor their diverse capabilities.

Girls do not have to be relegated to the role of sidekick or damsel in distress; they can be the leaders, the heroes, the champions that save the day, find the cure, and go on the adventure. It is our hope that these high-quality children’s products will help a new generation of girls to grow and pursue whatever dreams they choose - to truly be Mighty Girls!

Amy Poehler's Smart Girls

Found on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Medium and their own website (details below)

Founded by actor and writer Amy Poehler and producer Meredith Walker, the Smart Girls organization is dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. Our motto is: Change the World by Being Yourself.

What began as an online show for young girls and an excuse to host spontaneous dance parties, has become a place for information, comedy and community. When we use the word “community” we take that very seriously. Therefore, our intention is to be a safe place where those who make up that community may be heard and offered a response.

We are finding that Smart Girls is the first community where many young men and women are able to express their own concerns. Through our “Call to Action” campaigns we encourage smart girls to volunteer and to be more curious about the world they live in. Our goal is to provide a healthy alternative to so much that is being marketed to young people on the internet.

We emphasize intelligence and imagination over “fitting in.” We celebrate curiosity over gossip. We are a place where people can truly be their weird and wonderful selves.
